Uses: Chlorotrifluoromethane is used as a low-temperature refrigerant for flash freezing and cryogenic processes that require human tissue to be frozen quickly for analysis and examination.

Process: In the Montedison chlrorflouorination process, reaction of C1- and C2 - Hydrocarbons with chlorine and hydrogen fluoride takes place in a single step in a fluidized bed reactor. The catalyst used is based on aluminum chloride.

Replacement: R-13 is replaced by the use of R-508A.
